Your Daily Horoscope, from Jonathan Cainer with Oscar Cainer

Mercury is stationary...

Mercury Retrograde October 2014
Well, not really. It doesn't ever stand still in the sky... any more than it ever actually moves backwards. But due to a visual anomaly, caused by the relative speed of the Earth, once in a while, for a few weeks at a time, it LOOKS as if this is what is happening.

It's an optical illusion. But then so, too, is a rainbow! And we all get very excited when we see one of those. A Rainbow makes us think of Leprechauns. Pots of Gold. And maybe Munchkin Lands with Yellow Brick Roads.

Retrograde Mercury makes us think of letters going missing, trains being cancelled, deals falling apart and suppliers of key services going on strike.

These are the popular traditions. And both, actually, are a bit far fetched.

Though a few folk may claim to have met Leprechauns... And, from the way that they flash their cash, we can only assume that others must have stumbled on the odd pot of gold, Catching sight of a rainbow is no guarantee of great good fortune.

Nor, despite what some astrologers seem to delight in saying, is making a decision or commitment, during Mercury retrograde, a guarantee of failure.

I was surprised to discover this. It is, after all, one of the most persistent myths about astrology. Back when I was a student astrologer, it was one of the things that all my fellow students talked about. But not so much my teachers. They encouraged me to use my ears and eyes. And when I observed the actual impact that a Retrograde Mercury was prone to make, I soon saw that for most folk at least, disaster was not inevitable.

Some, for sure, would experience frustration with their email. Or their bank. Or their mobile phone. But usually, the folk most susceptible to such nuisances would turn out to be people on a path in need of revision and review.

Mercury is about clarity and communication. When it is retrograde, it requires us to turn around and sort out any mess we've got into, untie any knots we may have created... and dispel any fog that may be hanging around us.
It's sometimes possible that, even if we immediately stop to do this, we may have to wait till Mercury has completed its retrograde phase before we see an improvement in our situation.

But I've also observed instant, pleasing changes in complex, slow processes happening slap bang in the middle of retrograde Mercury phases. Indeed, closer observation has led me to doubt the importance and significance of Mercury Retrograde phases altogether.

These are not, in my experience, the actual times to be wary. The moments that really matter are the moments just before and just after Mercury appears to change direction.

Astrologers call these the 'stations'. The few days just before... and just after Mercury turns retrograde are the ones that tend to be most eventful and intense. They're the times that cry out to us most volubly with a request to stop and take stock.

If you've recently heard such a cry, from the universe in general or from some aspect of your personal life in particular... You know what to do!

And you can also rest assured that now, you are doing it at the best possible moment!
If you're wondering whether you ought to cancel anything, back out of anything, drop anything or stop anything... don't!

Just relax.

Mercury's path through the zodiac will be back to normal soon enough. And all that you need, in life, to stabilise comfortably will do so naturally.

As long as you stay attentive, open minded... and willing to apply a little gentle course correction if the universe drops you a big enough hint!
