Both mystic vision and the scientists’ microscope have uncovered the healing
power of sound.
Ancient mystical traditions have long valued sound for its life-giving
properties. St John’s Gospel begins: “In the beginning was the word...” or
primordial sound or vibration. And it is via sound that we first experience the
world; we acquire “the sense of sound” in the womb, five months before we
are born.
Science has now logged the creative and restorative power of sound. For
musician, clairvoyant and healer Frank Perry, 30 years of working with Tibetan
singing bowls have proven that the power of sound can heal and “help people get
back in touch with their real selves.”
Perry says: “When you listen to a pop song it is telling you a story with
music and words. A singing bowl also tells you a story but with no words. They
come from a tradition of thousands of years of meditation. The person being
treated doesn’t have to analyse the sound, it works on a subtler level.
“I am convinced that we over-identify with our physical selves, our egos.
This leads to stress.”
Such stress can be alleviated by sound healing. A typical session lasts about
an hour. The diagnosis consists of sensing the seven chakra energy centres,
situated from the top of the head to the base of the spine. These channel the
life-source energy into our physical bodies. Perry first uses five pairs of
bowls to “retune the right and left sides of the brain. So that the forces of
logic and intuition are balanced.”
Next he moves to specific energy centres. The throat chakra, for instance,
relates to our will and self-expression. He uses different bowls to boost or
correct different energy states: gold works with depression, blue emanates peace
and green purifies. “What I am looking to do is to align the personal with the
universal. Singing bowls can harmonise so that people are not overly imposing
their wills on a situation.”
