2003 - Energy
If, as they tell us, everything is made of energy, why does a
telephone keep its shape?
Why don't the atoms disperse and reshape into, say, an
alarm clock?
The fact is that 99.999 percent of what we see isn't there,
anyway!
Matter is just one billionth part of the cosmos. So what holds it
together? Some people believe the answer lies in "information fields".
These fields allows energy and matter to hold a form. We start life in
the "information field of an egg" and we end up in the "information
field of a corpse!" A virus or a cancer, according to this belief, is
also such an energy field.
Dr Keith Scott Mumby takes this view. He defines disease as a
"disruption, cessation or distortion arising in the information and
energy fields." The best way to approach disease, he argues, is by
correcting these disturbances. If we can only drop the notion that we
are just material beings, we can allow spiritual forces to come into
play. Healing then no longer becomes a matter of popping pills to
suppress symptoms. Instead, it can become a "loving matter of soothing
disharmony in a distressed part or organism.”
This notion, that consciousness has a major part to play in health, has
escaped modern western thought, but shamans and mystics have known of
its benefits for thousands of years. We shall return to the topic soon.
