19th March 2003 - The male and female reborn in nature
Friday’s
Spring Equinox is traditionally a time of awakening and balance.
March 21 also marks the United Nations International Day for the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Ironically, war is uppermost in our minds at this time of expectation
and rebirth. Across the world, day and night are of equal length.
Here, new hope dawns as winter gives way to spring. Our Celtic
ancestors celebrated the fertility of the new season. Early Christians
overlaid Easter, the church’s only lunar celebration, on the festival,
honouring Oestre, the goddess of light. They also borrowed the
egg symbolism from the druids – hatching new beginnings.
Glennie Kindred, an authority on ancient Britain, says: “The equinox
is all about balancing our energies – our inner intuitive part
with our extrovert selves. It is a point where we can stop to
take stock – and, with the help of the earth’s energies, realise
our dreams. It is a time for action – to bring a vision of peace
into reality.”

The
end of racism
The United Nations chose March 21 to champion the elimination
of racism in memory of the victims of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre
in South Africa. Police killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration.
Kofi Anan, UN Secretary-General, calls it “a day to celebrate
the many steps the world has taken to free itself from racial
hatred, and a day to reflect on the challenges that remain, and
our commitment to overcoming them.” |
