Welcome to Mark Winter, a respected authority on eastern philosophies and the New Age. Mark, a long-time friend of Jonathan, will examine a very wide variety of New Age subjects each week on this page.

Archive for Wednesday 26th March 2003 - Prayer

A sense of powerlessness often triggers the desire to pray. So it is with a war that so few of us want.

But can prayer make a difference? Science is making interesting discoveries with what it calls ‘non-local’ forces, which suggest that conscious thought can be transmitted in a realm beyond time and space.

Consciousness, it seems, is as fundamental to the universe as energy and matter. A notable experiment with heart-attack patients in a San F rancisco hospital demonstrated the power of prayer with the ‘prayed-for’ group enjoying significantly better recovery than the control group. Dr Larry Dossey, author of Healing Word, The Power Of Prayer, confirms that our minds and prayers can operate outside time and space with distance healing.

Caroline Uchima of the UN-affiliated World Peace Prayer Society is positive, too: “Prayer is using the mind to make something happen. Positive affirmations can work, as everything is connected.”

100 Monkey Syndrome

The case of the monkeys who unknowingly passed newly-acquired skills – washing food in sea water to improve the taste – to fellow monkeys on another island is an example of a ‘prayer-like’ transference of consciousness. The theory is that when a certain realisation reaches a point of ‘critical mass’ it can change the way a society thinks and acts. Could this happen with the current peace movement?
