14th May 2003 - Professor Buteyko
MARK WINTER has a personal reason to thank Konstantin Buteyko,
who died earlier this month…
Professor Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko, pioneer in a drug-free
cure for asthma, developed breathing techniques which brought
relief to millions and freed many from life-long dependency on
drugs. Leicester-based practitioner, Margaret Brooks, who hosted
Buteyko’s UK tour in 1999, described Buteyko, who died in Moscow,
aged, 80, as a true genius. “He discovered the connection between
asthma and hyperventilation and how it can be resolved naturally.”
His life-long research linked incorrect breathing with 150 diseases.
My personal experience after a weekend course with Margaret last
November has been dramatic. My sporadic but nagging asthma has
disappeared and I no longer use an inhaler. Buteyko’s counter-intuitive
discovery that we breathe too much and too deeply has been a revelation
and I have lost over a stone in weight – so life is easier on
many different fronts. To benefit from the method requires two
daily 35-minute practice sessions, a small price to pay for anyone
who has suffered from debilitating breathlessness. For more information

Buteyko’s
control pause
To measure the quality of your breathing try this test. Breathe
in gently for two seconds. Exhale gently for three seconds. Pinch
your nose after exhaling, holding your breath until it becomes
difficult. Time how long you can hold your breath. If you manage
less than 10 seconds you could have health problems. If you can
hold less than 25 seconds your health might require attention;
30-40 seconds is satisfactory and 60 and above is excellent. The
Buteyko method is best learnt from a qualified teacher. |
