21st May 2003 - Vegetarianism
It’s national vegetarian week - as you may have noticed! Yesterday,
Ros Wynne Jones wrote in the Daily Mirror about her own brave
decision to give up meat twenty years ago. Today, the vegetarians
who work on this page (including Uri, Jonathan, Sally Fisher and
myself) would like to add a few more comments.
Though 2,000 people per week are turning vegetarian in the UK
alone... only one Briton in 25 is exclusively vegetarian. Many
find that the spirit is willing... but the craving for flesh makes
them feel too weak! They last out for a while - and then succumb
to the old temptations. That’s not too surprising. Meat eating
is an addiction, just like cigarette smoking. The body gets used
to it - as does the mind - so withdrawal symptoms can be psychological
as well as physical. And as all ex-addicts know, you are never
cured... always in ‘remission’. So some people can last 20 years
on a healthier diet before suffering a relapse. When this happens,
some feel guilty and others start to justify themselves, deciding
that they ‘need the extra protein’.
But the fact remains that there’s no nutritional reason whatsoever
for anyone ever to eat meat - and a whole bunch of health benefits
attached to giving it up or at least cutting it down.
On top of which, Uri and Jonathan both insist that, if you want
to develop psychic or supernatural powers... you’ll become much
more sensitive if you turn vegetarian!
