Cassandra Eason Improving your psychic abilities could be as simple as starting to communicate more with your pets.

Any dog or cat owner will recount how their pets uncannily anticipate their homecoming, and show great empathy in times of sorrow and trouble.

According to psychic researcher Cassandra Eason (pictured) we can easily establish a two-way connection with our pets by projecting mental images to them.

She explains: “Animals think just like children – in pictures. So the best way to practise is to just sit and think of your pet, actually make a mental picture of it and project it. And at the same time call your pet in your mind from another part of the house.”

At the root of animals’ psychic abilities is both the unconditional love they have for their owners and, despite their domestication, their connection to nature.

Eason believes this bond makes them very responsive to natural healing with herbs, essential oils and crystals. Rose quartz and jade are particularly good for calming dogs and cats, which have been taken in from rescue centres. Ideally keep unpolished chunks near the entrances of your house. Her book, The Psychic Power of Animals, is published by Piatkus (£9.99).

Reishi mushroom The ancient Chinese regarded the reishi mushroom as the elixir of life bestowing the gift of longevity. Modern research has found it effective in treating bronchitis, allergies, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers and, particularly, stress. Herbalist Christopher Hobbs reports that reishi can induce almost immediate calming and a feeling of serenity.

Buy Nothing Day, set for 29 November, is certainly an antidote to seasonal spending. But more important, say the organisers, is the opportunity to tune out from consumerism and turn on to the more natural joys of life.
