PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

August 17 2009 to August 23 2009

Monday August 17
Your Super Soar-away Sun

I am still reading that fascinating book by Greg Sams which suggests that the Sun may be a conscious, intelligent being or even a deity. He has titled it Sun of gOd, explaining that while pondering whether to use a capital G for that third word, he decided to leave it in lower case and capitalise the 'sun-shaped letter O' instead. His publishers, Weiser, have donated some copies to give away. I shall award them to those who send the most interesting (short) responses to all we discussed last week.

At noon on Saturday, August 22nd, I'll be talking at the Pontardawe festival, near Swansea and at 4pm on Sunday, August 23rd, I'll be talking at the Off Grid festival, near Glastonbury.

Tuesday August 18
Man About a Dog

Dear Jonathan,
Last week, you suggested that dogs cannot recognise themselves in a mirror. But my lurcher used to sit in front of a mirror and actively preen herself. She would look over her shoulder to admire her reflection and knew exactly what she was doing. She was highly intelligent and very responsive. She would 'speak' to me if she wanted anything; and if I blinked my eyes at her, she would respond in the same way, deliberately. She was overjoyed when she realised that it was possible to communicate without language, as was I. Don't ever underestimate animals.

Wednesday August 19
Greens Gather at Blue Stones

Remember the Green Gathering that was cancelled recently? The organisers of Pontardawe Festival, near Swansea, have kindly offered to accept the tickets and I am going to hold my talk there on Saturday at noon. I'm excited to discover that Pontardawe is also the site of an ancient stone circle. It's tantalisingly close to a ridge of the dolerite 'Bluestones' that mysteriously made their way, thousands of years ago, to Stonehenge. To this day, nobody can explain how they got there. Fittingly, for a journey to a world of mystery, I'm setting off under the Dark of The Moon!

At noon on Saturday, August 22nd, I'll be talking at the Pontardawe festival, near Swansea and at 4pm on Sunday, August 23rd, I'll be talking at the Off Grid festival, near Glastonbury.

Thursday August 20
Heaven on Earth

Dear Jonathan,
Recently, I heard someone preaching about how Hell is so horrifying, it defies description. I was extremely disturbed, I ended up crying for hours. I do not want to believe there is such a place or if there is, that it is not THAT bad. What is your take?
Julia

Dear Julia,
Hell definitely exists. Just ask anyone who has ever experienced agonising pain, deep terror or overwhelming sorrow. What, in all the rest of eternity, can be worse than that? It's a state that can be entered here, on this earth. The same goes for Heaven!

On Sunday, August 23rd, I'll be talking at the Off Grid festival, near Glastonbury.

Friday August 21
Winning words...

Hi Jonathan,
I believe we become stars in the sky when we pass. The ancients saw the Sun God as creator of all things. They were right. There would be no life without sunlight.
Kristy

Hi Jonathan,
Has the sun got a good enough CV to be classed as 'divine'? I mean, apart from providing the means to grow our food, helping flowers bloom, providing a beacon of joy and hope and supplying free heat, light, and energy, what has the sun ever done for us?
Adam

Dear Adam and Kristy, You both win copies of Greg Sams' book.

Saturday August 22
Your Week Ahead

Jupiter and Neptune are still close, though not as close as they were a couple of months back, nor as close as they will be again later this year. As the strength of their triple conjunction with Chiron reduces, the strength of the Saturn-Uranus opposition revives. This, you may recall, was the dominant alignment when the banking collapse began. We've got a few more months before the influence finally eases off. We can thus expect another wave of economic anxiety soon. But those who fear that it is 'too early for optimism' will still be wrong. It is never too early for optimism!

On Sunday, August 23rd, I'll be talking at the Off Grid festival, near Glastonbury.

Sunday August 23
Celebrity Sunday

Poor old George Michael. Well, actually, he's not poor. Nor is he even that old! Born in North London, on June 25, 1963, George is as sensitive and kind as any Cancerian. A 6am birth time gives him Moon in Leo; letting him hide his shyness behind a strong public persona. Though his Moon is opposite Saturn (emotions hit him hard), he's got Venus and Mercury squaring Mars and Pluto. Whatever else lets him down, his talent never will. Read the rest of this article...

Today, Sunday August 23rd at 4pm, I'll be talking at the Off Grid festival, near Glastonbury.
