PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

May 2 2011 to May 8 2011

Monday May 2
The Hills are Alive

Last week, I climbed nearly to the top of a magical mountain and managed to avoid the Royal Wedding all in one go. You'd think, by now, I would have had enough of unsolved ancient mysteries. But I'm still in South America and I want to see the "Nazca lines". These are giant hieroglyphs, scratched onto the ground in a remote part of Peru. Some say they're a local zodiac, created about 2,000 years ago to 'reflect' the symbols of the night sky. Others think they're the work of Aliens. I'm off to see them with my own eyes.

Tuesday May 3
What's My Nazca Line?

While Will and Kate were exchanging their vows, I was in a tiny plane, over the plateau of Nazca, Peru. There on the flat, desert ground, giant 'carvings' of animals, people and plants can only be seen from the air. They are about 2,000 years old and some people think they form a kind of 'earth zodiac'. Others see an even more direct association with astronomical phenomena. I'm still getting my breath back from witnessing something so ancient and impressive... and getting my knuckles back from that very bumpy flight. By tomorrow, I should have a theory to share!

Wednesday May 4
Pole Position

Who drew those giant symbols in the Peruvian desert? Why could they only be seen from the air? Did they have hot air balloons? Were they trying to communicate with UFOs? As I flew over Nazca, it dawned on me that, long before this became the land of the Incas, it was a land of artists. Nature worship is traditional. Mountains were 'gods' who sent rain. The images all have some association with water. What if they worked in teams, getting one observer to shin up a wooden pole and guide the rest in drawing 'requests' to the sky?

Thursday May 5
Mysterious Ways

I'm beginning to regret the explanation that I offered, yesterday, for those Nazca lines in Peru. A mystery is a precious thing. We do ourselves no favours when we try, too hastily, to close an open question. Ideas that sound logical and sensible are rarely any more 'right' than wild, imaginative dreams. I flew over the Nazca lines - but that doesn't make me an expert. Frankly, I'd far prefer to discover that they were made by (and/or for) aliens. That would be more fun. By the way, I'm now writing your daily forecast... from the Amazon jungle!

Friday May 6
River Deep Mountain High

I'm still in Peru, but now in the jungle. Yesterday, the driver of an auto-rickshaw offered to show me his home. He led me along the narrow streets of Iquitos, down some steps to a tributary of the Amazon. After crossing several rickety wooden bridges we reached a battered old long boat with two small children in the back. Then he took me round the 'estate'. Hundreds of people live there. Most seem poor but surprisingly friendly. But they are worried because the Amazon is approaching an all-time high. Though their houses float, the connecting gangplanks may soon submerge.

Saturday May 7
Your Week Ahead

This week brings a lovely triple conjunction. Unlike the long one we had some whie back, this is a brief alignment. It involves Mercury and Venus, both of which are nearer to the Sun than us - so they take even less time to get round the Sun than we do. Both move rapidly through the zodiac but this week they catch up with each other - and with the big, auspicious Jupiter. That's a hopeful sign and a promise of wish-granting fairies on the move. If you want to wish on the conjunction, look east, midweek, just before dawn.
