PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

March 5 2012 to March 11 2012

Monday March 5
Free Tibet or Not Free Tibet

Dear Jonathan,
I grew up in South Africa during the apartheid era. The dream of change in that country was as remote as it may seem for today's Tibetans. In 1966, I heard the industrialist Anton Rupert say: 'The man who does not believe in miracles is not a realist.' I never forgot it. Perhaps, someday, Tibet will be free. Raymond

Dear Jonathan,
In a recent forecast you asked whether the chicken or the egg came first. Perhaps it was the egg. Behind everything there is an intention - a creative burst of energy. Jane

Dear Raymond, Dear Jane, Perhaps.

A giant meteor, burning up in Earth's atmosphere? An alien space- craft suffering some catastrophic engine fire? Debate rages amongst the many who saw this weekend's spectacular trail of light. Astrologers are being asked if it had symbolic significance. What meaning do we read into such a rare and powerful sight, hurtling through the sky from the tip of Scotland to the South of England. Was it, perhaps, a cosmic commentary on the Edinburgh Parliament's desire to sever ties with London? But whatever it was, it bodes no ill for any of us. Our daily astrological outlooks remain entirely unaffected.

Tuesday March 6
Dark Matters

Hi Jonathan,
If the Dark of the Moon is a good time to plant things that grow in the dark, would it not be an auspicious time for conceiving a child, too? I hear that the waxing moon is better but, as children grow in the dark, I was just wondering. Rab

Dear Rab,
Did I say any of that? Astrologers broadly agree but we have our differences too. I sometimes grow bean sprouts. I never notice if the seeds I start at New Moon fare better. As for conception.... don't get me started. Oh, OK then. I'll say more tomorrow.

Wednesday March 7
Fertility Nights

Yesterday, a reader asked if it was more auspicious to conceive a child under the Dark of the Moon or a waxing moon. I almost didn't answer but, having calmed down since, here's my comment. The auspicious time to conceive a child is during the window of time when a child can be conceived! The Moon is indeed a factor here but the cycle is individual, varying from woman to woman, year to year. Some specialist astrologers supply lunar birth control charts. But it's one thing to predict maximum fertility, another to guarantee when the stork will be absent.

Thursday March 8
Full On

The Moon, as I expect you will have noticed, is Full. Big, bright, bold and brilliant. Just the kind of thing you want to see in the sky. Once upon a time, a Full Moon made all the difference. When there were no lamps or batteries, you could find your way by its light, even just about read by it. You could stay up longer, get more done. Seemingly, we're not so sensitive any more. Every night looks the same to us. But somewhere deep within, we all tend to feel a little less inhibited on nights like tonight.

Friday March 9
180 Degrees of Separation

I should point out that next week's Grand Trine will not be visible to skywatchers. It involves four planets (two so close, they act as one force) each occupying positions 120 degrees apart. The circle of the zodiac contains, like every circle, 360 degrees. If you're in a flat place with no hills on your horizon, your view of the heavens might span 180 degrees. The other 180 will be below you. The most you can hope to see is two of the three positions in this alignment. But the 'paired planets' are Venus and Jupiter. They're very visible!

Saturday March 10
Your Week Ahead

This week, Jupiter, Mars and Pluto each reach the ninth degree of an 'Earth sign' on the same day. We astrologers call this a Grand Trine - and when we see it in someone's birth chart, we consider it highly auspicious. Babies born this week should be blessed with many talents. This Grand Trine also bodes well for Virgo, Taurus, Scorpio, Aries, Sagittarius and Pisces. As it involves a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, Librans will benefit too. Even if your sign is not listed above, you'll yet have reason to look back on this week and remember it fondly!
