PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

Starman

More Sally Fisher Art here.

When describing zodiac signs, astrologers often point to pop stars. Mick Jagger, they say, has all the panache of a typical Leo. Taureans, from Ella Fitzgerald to Bing Crosby to Adele, are often blessed with compelling voices. They get a bit stuck though, when it comes to Capricorn. People born under this shy sign shouldn't, in theory, develop 'big personalities.' When they do, they either find a way to stay in their own skin, profitably ploughing a lifelong furrow or they create a peculiar persona that leaves a lasting mark. There will never be another Elvis but 200 years from now, there will still be Elvis impersonators. And there will never be another Aladdin Sane.

David Bowie had the drive of an Aries, the voice of a Taurean, the wit of a Gemini, the empathy of a Cancerian, the swagger of a Leo, the observant eye of a Virgo, the charm of a Libran, the certainty of a Scorpio, the aim of a Sagittarian, the integrity of an Aquarian and the fluidity of a Piscean. He was the embodiment of an old astrological adage; 'in each personal birth chart is the potential for every sign to express itself.' This Capricorn reached deep, found all his hidden talents and expressed them all.

He appeared unexpectedly before me once, when I was 15. I had paid for a seat at the Bradford Alhambra to see a singer songwriter called David Bowie, I found myself staring in awe at a rock singer called Ziggy Stardust. He said he had come from the future and his band, the Spiders, were from Mars. My eyes made me wonder if he was acting. My ears insisted he must be telling the truth. I never knew what to believe. I do now. "There's a Starman, waiting in the sky..."

Down Under the Hood

Recently, I shared a letter from new readers who, having discovered this page in their local Australian newspaper, had suggestions. They said: 'Today you raise a range of philosophical points where we just need facts to decide if it is worth getting out of bed. For example, we like our mechanic to say exactly how much it will cost to fix the gearbox rather than talk us through the Toyota manufacturing process for the 1995 Celica, four-speed manual.' Todd and Benita, I hear you but if I don't make my readers think for themselves, I am doing them no favours!

Sun or Moon or Rising

Hi Jonathan,
Some time ago you clarified that you write your daily forecasts for Sun Signs only. But my Moon Sign far more often resonates more with how I'm feeling. I note that another reader has observed the same. Maxine

Hi there Jonathan,
Recently, with your nephew Oscar, you tried writing forecasts with consideration for people's Moon Signs or Rising Signs. They were good readings but they didn't resonate with me in the same way your regular predictions do. Jennifer

Dear Jonathan and Oscar,
Overall, your experiment was confusing. I find this page's accurate Sun forecasts are enough. Bill

Fraud Reward

More Sally Fisher Art here.

Skeptics, for decades, have had a million-dollar reward on offer for anyone who can prove any paranormal, esoteric or psychic art. They know that nobody will ever claim this, not because esoteric traditions are false but because they are subtle, subjective belief systems. You simply can't subject them to standard scientific evaluation. I've been talking lately to various practitioners who are tired of being treated like fools and fakes. There's a plan afoot to offer a 'million-pound reward' for anyone who can categorically disprove the validity of healing, homeopathy or astrology... I'll tell you more about this soon.

Your Week Ahead

Both Jupiter and Mercury are retrograde. These celestial phenomena have unfairly acquired a bad reputation. They don't portend the inauspicious climate that some of my more melodramatic colleagues often advise us to expect. Such celestial situations just allow us all to think again about where we've been and where we're going. They may also allow us to see deadlines, which once appeared imperative and non-negotiable, to be fluid, flexible and able to be advantageously altered. Resolutions, which, for some of us, seemed overly ambitious at the start of the year, may yet prove surprisingly easy to fulfil.

Remember, your Love Forecast today does not just cover romance. A love forecast may also have something to say about your family life, your closest friendships and even some of your most important working relationships.
