I’m a stargazer - but not quite in the same way as Jonathan Cainer. The stars I spot are the kind who appear on Jonathan Ross’s show, not Patrick Moore’s! Celebrities have tremendous energy, and it can be inspiring just to spend a few minutes with them. I recently met Sir Peter Ustinov. I told him that I believed the power of positive thinking was unlimited. He sparkled: “I’m the king of positivity! Everything that I have achieved has come about because I believed in myself. I always believed I could do it, and I ignored anyone who tried to talk me out of my schemes.” Sir Peter has directed, produced and acted in many great shows and films. And he’s convinced that the basis of his success has been positive thinking. “Think positively,” he told me, “and you don’t need luck - you’ll make your own.” Another great inspiration to me was Shirley Bassey. We met by the Thames while David Blaine was on show in his Perspex box. Shirley had come to convince herself that he was really in there. I was struck by how much energy was compressed into her small frame. I soon found out how she kept her batteries so highly charged. Someone spotted her, and soon the whole embankment was cheering and chanting for her. She behaved like a queen, walking gracefully to the perimeter fence to wave to fans, showering them with smiles and blowing kisses. The love that radiated back to her rolled across us in waves. The reception confirmed my suspicion that Shirley Bassey is one of the best-loved figures in Britain. With the chance to meet inspirational people like this, you can hardly blame me for being a stargazer!
