Nobody's mobile just rings any more - we're all competing to play ringtones
that tell the world what great musical taste we have... and how up-to-date our
phones are. I'm as guilty as anyone - if you hear an orchestra blasting out
Beethoven on a London Street, it's probably just my mobile! We know it's silly,
but we do love gadgets. I've got one on my desk that's at least 100,000 years
old - a stone knife. It fits perfectly into my hand, so the prehistoric
craftsman who spent months honing this tool must have been left-handed, like me. The
flint edge is still sharp enough to draw blood. My intuition tells me it
belonged to a medicine man, and would have been a revered, perhaps holy, artefact.
After 100 millennia, it found its way to me. Could our modern gadgets ever be
so special?
