When an American publisher challenged me to design a limited-edition medallion to accompany my latest book, I was thrilled. The symbolism of coins and medals is immensely powerful - think of the mysterious, autocratic heads we find on Roman coins more than 2,000 years old. Could I create something as arresting and meaningful? I decided to throw away the traditional concept of a single image on my coin, and instead to pack both sides with as many spiritual symbols as I could. The key element on each face comes from the animal world - a fish on one side, two hawks staring at each other across an infinity sign on the other. The fish represents everything material in our lives: the food we need, and the ocean of humanity. The hawks are our limitless potential, capable of soaring into the unbounded space above the ocean.
The Hebrew letters that represent God are included, next to the English word 'good', because God comes out of good! And two of the most mysterious Greek letters are in there too: pi and omega. Pi is used by mathematicians to signify a special number which never ends... and omega is the final letter, the end itself. Together, they reflect my belief in life after death, as do the spinning arrows. The blazing pyramid above the digits 11:11 provides a portal to other dimensions. Whenever I see two elevens, I feel like an actor getting a prompt from an unseen stage manager "Go on, Uri, be bold and trust your intuitions!" The all-seeing eye, a symbol that is sacred in almost every religion the world over, surveys the whole design, and there are hearts top and bottom of the coin, just as love should be at the top and bottom of our lives. The human faces are every man and every woman - and also, more specifically, they are me and my wife, Hanna. We're two sides of the same coin too! |
