I used to be nuts about expensive watches. I loved going into jewellery stores, in tattered jeans and a T-shirt, with a big Rolex on my wrist – first the assistants would scowl at me, then they’d see the 10,000-dollar watch... and suddenly I was their favourite customer. Once the First Lady of Mexico told me to take my pick of diamond-studded watches from a case brimming with golden timepieces. I chose a platinum Vacheron Constantin. I couldn’t bear to take it off, so I would wear a watch, sometimes two, on each wrist – they never quite tallied, so I couldn’t ever be certain of the right time! Just before my son was born, I realised how vain and silly I was being. Since then, I hardly ever wear a watch.
