John Michell Mysteries

Archive for Thursday 10th October 2002 - The face of an ET

There were some wonderful crop circles this summer, and one of them was sensational. On August 15, in a Hampshire wheatfield just outside Winchester, a huge formation was discovered. It was the face of an ET, as commonly imagined, and held up beside it was a disc. A spiral of dots from the centre to the outside of the disc spelt out a coded message.

Paul Vigay, the computer and space expert, interpreted the message. ‘Beware the bearers of FALSE gifts & their BROKEN PROMISES. Much PAIN but still time. BELIEVE. There is GOOD out there. We OPpose DECEPTION. Conduit CLOSING (BELL SOUND).’

That does not say much or make much sense. With its mixture of small and capital letters, it looks to me like a crossword clue – hinting at a further, hidden meaning. The makers of it are unknown, and so is their purpose. You can see it as a mysterious artwork or an advertisment of some kind. But you still have to explain how it was done. No team of circle-makers has ever claimed a formation of this scale and quality.

Some people find it sinister. They don’t like the look of the ET. But if this really is a message from elsewhere, it is certainly not threatening. And if that is what ETs look like, it is not for us to complain.

If you would like to know more on the subject of crop formations, a pamphlet by John Michell, an investigation into last year’s sightings in Hampshire, is still available. Offer open to United Kingdom only. (The Face & The Message, £7, including postage, Gothic Image, 7 High Street, Glastonbury, Somerset BA6 9DP.)
