PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
September 17th to September 22nd 2007

MONDAY September 17
Two hot topics

Tomorrow, I'll tell my travel tales. First, two hot topics. If astrologers could reliably decide on someone's guilt or innocence, the world would not need judges and juries. It is not appropriate to pass such a verdict on the strength of a horoscope alone. I can, though, offer a prediction. Neither of Madeleine's parents will ever be convicted on any charge relating to any aspect of their daughter's disappearance. Now, a prediction about money. No UK financial institution will fold owing any customers money this year, next year or as far into the future as I have yet looked.

TUESDAY September 18
Cheops with everything!

At one point last week, I found myself bent double, climbing a long ladder in a tiny tunnel. Eventually, I emerged in a chamber at the top of the Cheops Pyramid. There wasn't much to see, but it was, at least, better than the view from the base of the Sphinx. There, on one side you see the only remaining wonder of the ancient world. And on the other, a famous fast food outlet. Such emphasis on pizza in Giza is unnervingly anomalous. I predict though, long after this epicurean empire has faded, those triangular tombs will remain resplendent.

WEDNESDAY September 19
Another brick in the wall...

In Jerusalem, I went to the Wailing Wall. To many it's more of a 'Wishing Wall'. You write out a request, fold it up, poke it into a gap - then, bingo... your cosmic order is placed. Having written my own tome on this topic recently, I settled for wandering over to the wall and putting my hand on it. I closed my eyes and inwardly asked the wall what IT wanted. I distinctly felt I got a reply. I heard the word 'Water'. Or perhaps that was 'Mortar'. The Pyramids too (by the way) are in serious need of repointing.

THURSDAY September 20
Under Egyptian Skies

For the Pharaohs, life was all about death! Their religion centred on preparation for the next world. To them, planets and stars were gods, just as they were to the Babylonians and Greeks. Heavenly movements influenced the timing of Egyptian festivals and the positioning of sacred structures. The 'three pyramids' at Giza are allegedly aligned to mimic Orion, as I clearly saw recently, while the Sphinx was inspired by the stars of Leo. The dog star was also important to the Egyptians. Because its appearance coincided with the flooding of the Nile, they got very serious about Sirius.

FRIDAY September 21
More from the Nile File

After a while in Egypt, my Dad and I set off to Saqqar to see a tomb with stepped, rather than steep sides. This looked strangely, superficially, like the Mayan temples I visited in Mexico. There, as luck would have it, we met an archaeologist, currently engaged in an excavation. He didn't know who I was or what I did. But he launched straight into an explanation of Egyptian astronomy. As he spoke and explained the hieroglyphs on the walls I began to gain a very vivid image of what the pharaohs foresaw about the future of the world.

SATURDAY September 22
A Full Moon and the tides

Tides rise. Tides fall. Twice a month. Every month. Without fail. Moons wax. Moons wane. Twice a month. Every month. Without fail. Well, once every 29.5 days, actually. In a thirteen-moon cycle that coincides with the cycle of the Sun once every 19 years or so. Then there are wheels within wheels. 'Sub cycles' (including eclipse cycles) that take much longer to recur. In essence, though, the pattern is simple. Emotions 'breathe in'. Emotions 'breathe out'. Traditionally, it's out at full moon, in at new. Actually, sometimes, it seems to swap over. Either way, this week brings a Full Moon and thus, a high tide in the ocean of the heart.
