Monday September 22

I recently printed a letter from Bonnie, who said that, though she lives far from Switzerland, she had heard a constant low hum since they switched on the Large Hadron Collider. I have since received several similar reports. So, are these people sensitives or fantasists? Not that the two are mutually exclusive. People with exceptionally deep awareness are often also blessed with a vivid imagination. But it would be interesting to know whether any of them have noticed a return to normality, now that the Collider has had to be switched off until further notice for urgent repairs.

The late, great American astrologer, Dane Rudhyar, said a lot about the birth chart of the USA. Though most of my colleagues agree that it should be set for July 4, 1776, there was (and still is) much debate about the precise time that the Declaration of Independence became official. Rudhyar, after much research, gave it a teatime horoscope that had a Libran 'midheaven'. This would certainly explain why US elections results often balance on a knife edge. Many suspect that the result of the current contest will be even tighter than the infamous ' hanging chad' vote of 2000.

See hear

I have had another email from Bonnie, who has been 'hearing' the Large Hadron Collider. She says, 'I could just have a vivid imagination, being a Virgo and all, but the hum did stop when the collider was shut down.' Meanwhile, in other news, scientists at Southampton University are running a test to see if patients who nearly die in surgery really do float above their bodies. They are going to put pictures, face up, on a high shelf in operating theatres and ask those who recover to describe them. Let's hope they don't use Picassos or Jackson Pollocks.

Mercury has already been standing still for a week. Now it is officially 'retrograde'. At such times, processes of commerce and communication become subject to delay, misunderstandings increase - and even simple processes prove complicated. None of this bodes well for the US Congress agreeing a rapid bail-out of the financial system. Yet even this may not all be as problematic as some fear. When Mercury is retrograde, great reflection takes place. Urgent matters become less urgent. By the time Mercury changes direction again, in mid-October, much that seems out of control may have settled down again, naturally.

A wise teacher once said, 'To generate wealth, you need an opportunistic eye, a determined mind.... and a kind heart.' Upon hearing this, a student asked, 'Why the kind heart? Surely that makes it harder?' 'Indeed,' replied the expert, 'but without that, what use would the money be?' Mercury retrograde is a time for reflection. So perhaps we should reflect on the 'sub prime' mortgages that have proved so toxic to the banking system. A scheme to help people who could not afford their repayments would have kept the current chaos at bay... for a fraction of the cost.

Saturday Focus - Busta gets Busted

A drink driving charge and a fight with your chauffeur may make you seem nasty in New York but in London, it hardly makes you hardcore. Unless, that is, you work at London City Airport.
To the outside world, it was a passing story. Rapper refused entry to country. Rapper's lawyer gets injunction to stop deportation. Rapper succeeds.
But Busta Rhymes would have seen his recent brush with immigration as a much more epic encounter. Perhaps even the fulfilment of his own prophecy. He once wrote a piece called 'They're out to get me'. Though it contains much of the paranoia you might expect, it also contains a telling line;
"The more money I get, I get more dangerous stupid / 'Cause I been broke before, and I refuse to go back to it."
Taureans are fond of their creature comforts and Busta was born a Bull in Brooklyn on May 20 1972. On that day, Venus was forming a close conjunction to Mars. So despite his carefully cultivated image as a gangsta, he's got a hopeless romantic streak. In "I'd do it all" he says
"Miss can I get a second to speak and quietly mention
That I am so into who you are, can I get your attention..."
Later in that same rap, he reveals the way Jupiter in his birth chart opposes Mars and Venus to create an arrogant attitude. "I'd like to learn from ya, but I'm 'bout to turn from ya, It's been about a week and I ain't even heard from ya"
Not that he's shy of commitment. A Moon/Saturn square in his horoscope means he's keen to be loyal but aware of how dark desire can detract from this ideal. In "Why We Die" he can be heard claiming,
"I live and die for all the shit I believe / And rep for everything I stand for with every single breath I breathe / Like the intake from cigarette smoke, it's like you inhale / the demon in the gutter"
Busta's lyrics are not just surprisingly smart at times, they reveal great self awareness... a trait that all with Moon in Virgo share.
"One Two Three Four, I be knockin' at your DOOR / Hit y'all niggas with an effect that y'all never felt beFORE / OR leave you with someMORE freaky dicky metaPHOR"
Despite the contentious language and the aggressive stance, it all begins to sound more like a middle aged man who is proud of his poetry than a fiend waiting to tear anyone's roof off.
But then, Busta's actual name is Trevor. And this weekend he must be smiling. A few hours locked in a little room has ensured that an otherwise unremarkable concert trip to Britain will live forever in the hall of infamy.

Your Week Ahead

Intense planetary alignments occur this week. Not all of these, though, are problematic. Good things can sometimes be powerful and overwhelming too! Expect to encounter a lot of emotion and reflection. Mercury remains retrograde. Many people are finding that before they can go forward, they have to go backwards... to some unresolved issue that must be at least partially cleared up before everyone can move on. That's potentially difficult. But it's also encouraging. Out in the wider world, it suggests that the causes of the recent economic slowdown are now being understood. That can only hasten the onset of recovery.
