PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY September 7 2009 to September 13 2009 Monday September 7 Tree of Life Hi Jonathan, When I was a child, on sunny days when the Sun dipped in and out of clouds, I used to believe the Sun was breathing; in when it went dull; out when it was sunny again! Pamela Dear Jonathan, On a long drive I stopped my car by a huge oak tree. As I sat watching, though there was no wind, I saw the branches gently moving up and down as if they were breathing in and out. I'll never forget that. Tuesday September 8 Milk of Manganesia Dear Jonathan, You recently published a letter suggesting that even vegetarians cause pain, if only to vegetables, when they pick them. But for me the dividing line in what to eat is whether it is a sentient being; one which has nerve endings that allow the feeling of pain. Nancy. Dear Jonathan, A Japanese comic book author, Madoka Kawaguchi, explored the idea of everything having a consciousness and feeling pain. She created a character who could hear any phenomena that has a 'voice' - everything from animals to spirits to fresh fruits and vegetables. Wednesday September 9 Food for Thought Dear Jonathan, Ancient Meso-American societies tell of a time when all plants, animals and people communicated directly with each other. Human beings were allowed to hunt or gather with one restriction: take only that which they needed. But people became too greedy, so the animal and plant kingdoms had a meeting. The animals decided to hide, making it harder to gather meat. The plants chose to be compassionate, allowing for seasonal availability. All living beings have spirits. Some readily sacrifice themselves; some don't. The important thing is to recognise the sacrifice of those who by their death, give us life. Thursday September 10 Hi Jonathan, You recently said that things in the next few weeks will be no more intense than they were in February. But when Saturn and Uranus opposed each other last November I suddenly lost my job. When they did it again in February, a sudden argument nearly put an end to my relationship. I'm not looking forward to these next weeks! Elaine Dear Elaine, It's my job to look forward to things! And when I look forward to this next opposition, I see challenges. They won't, though, be any worse than experiences we've successfully survived in the past. Friday September 11 Mercury Retrograde Strikes Again In the old days, astrologers used something called an 'ephemeris'. This provided daily 'noon' positions for every planet. If we wanted, say, a 9.33am reading, we'd take the noon position for that day, subtract the noon position for the previous day and, using an abacus (oh, all right, a calculator) we'd divide up that difference. Amongst other things, these books would tell us when Mercury, the communication planet, was retrograde. Now Astrologers in th UK at least, don't need them. They don't even need computers. One look at the news tells them. A postal strike? Then Mercury must be retrograde. As indeed, it is now. Saturday September 12 Your Week Ahead This week's big news involves a repeat of the intense opposition between Saturn and Uranus. This alignment that gave us a banking collapse and a sea change in global politics with the election of Barack Obama. Clearly, the omen has the power to create positive progress as well as worrying news. We should expect, soon, to see more developments we never thought we'd live to see. It's a time to forget old certainties about how the world works. Globally and individually, the folk who will thrive in this next phase of our future are the ones who are open to questioning 'accepted wisdom'.
