PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

December 6 2010 to December 12 2010

Monday December 6
Space Race

Think of the planets as runners on a racetrack, albeit competitors who travel at very different speeds. Mercury, this week, passes Pluto. That's not so extraordinary. The winged messenger travels over 250 times faster than the symbol of mass delusion so it frequently 'laps' this tiny, distant zodiacal body. This year, though, as it passes, Mercury realises that Mars, the planet of assertion and ambition, is close behind it. It turns in its tracks and hangs around long enough for the three planets to meet. Somewhere in the world, a pretty big argument is about to blow up!

Tuesday December 7
Common Sky

We all have different interests. That's why we appreciate the things we have in common. What's in the news, what's on at the movies, what the weather is doing, what's on TV, what's happening in the world of sport... these are our shared, cultural interests. So too, are the positions of the planets. Until a couple of hundred years ago, all astronomers were astrologers. By reading meaning into the movements of heavenly bodies, we gave everyone a reason to take an interest in the sky. Now astronomers and astrologers disagree about whether planets have meaning... and everyone misses out!

Wednesday December 8
United States

Yesterday, I listed our common interests: the factors that potentially unite all (or most) of us. What's in the news, what's on at the movies, what the weather is doing, what's on TV, what's happening in sport. I went on to suggest that the positions of the planets are also of universal interest... and deserve more attention. Thinking about this, it occurs to me the state of the sky must surely be more 'real' and important than what's happening in the soaps, who is winning the talent show... or how in various leagues and tables certain sportspeople are doing.

Thursday December 9
The Signs They Are A Changin'

Dear Jonathan,
I am a Libran and would like to change the name of my sign to Scales because, in Australia at least, the word Libra has been appropriated by a feminine hygiene company. If that's not possible, then I would like to change star signs. I have always wanted to be a Cancerian. How do I go about it? Philip

Dear Philip,
You jokingly touch here, on a good, serious question. Can we change our zodiac signs? We can, after all, change nationality. We can change religion. We can even change sex! Hmmm. Let me think about this.

Friday December 10
False Karma Alarma

Hi Jonathan,
I have no retrograde planets in my birth chart. I have been told by one astrologer this means I have a life without purpose and am creating karma for myself in this life. I have also been told by another astrologer this means I resolved all my past karma through many lifetimes and am an old soul. Which do you agree with? Deb

Dear Deb,
I was recently told off, by a fellow astrologer, for making it sound as if I think some of my colleagues talk nonsense. I don't want to get into any more trouble.

Saturday December 11
Your Week Ahead

It's funny how Christmas seems to come around more quickly every year, yet when we get to December, the festive season suddenly starts to feel further away than ever. There's not yet much sign of a holiday mood in the heavens. Mercury turns retrograde and joins Mars as it forms a conjunction with Pluto. It's not a time for talking, it's a time for listening. It's not a time for fighting, it's a time for developing strategy But as the week goes by, a serious mood will lift. You may even start to hear sleighbells!

Sunday December 12
Your Week Ahead Part Two
