PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

November 21 2011 to November 27 2011

Monday November 21
Get a Gripe

After 30 years of giving astrological advice, I've learned that people sometimes prefer complaining about problems to solving them. I got reminded of this the other day when my three-month-old grandson came round. After sitting for a while in his chair, staring at his feet Gus got grumpy. Apparently his hand was stuck and he just couldn't move it. I tried to point out that this was because he was holding it tightly with his other hand but he didn't seem to be interested. But I suppose we can all be a bit like that at times!

Tuesday November 22
Crescent Present

I never tire of looking at the Moon. I love the way its changing shape marks the passage of time. Cultures and traditions may differ dramatically but the Moon belongs to us all. To some, tonight, it is a waning crescent. To others, a pair of horns. When it reduces from bent banana to a golden toenail clipping, it is nearly gone and this time round, the moonless nights will mean a special treat is in store. Not just the regular, mystical 'Dark of The Moon' but later this week, over some parts of our planet, a glorious eclipse.

Wednesday November 23
Rename Game

Dear Jonathan,
I wonder if it is time to change the symbol for the sign of Cancer. Why must there be a crab? Why not a wave, a moon and some pearls in a nice silvery setting? At least, please change the name. Cancer is a frightful disease. Christina

Dear Christina,
While I like your artistic suggestion, some while ago I hosted a debate on the topic in this space. Many Cancerians agreed that they'd like to change the name. Many more said, 'Please leave it.' I decided to wait and test the mood in a few years' time.

Thursday November 24
Let it Shine

Once more, we are in the Dark of the Moon. This time it's particularly powerful because, whilst it still hides from our view at night, the Moon makes a short daytime appearance tomorrow, blotting out the light of the Sun. This partial solar eclipse is visible from South Africa, Antarctica, Tasmania and most of New Zealand but you don't have to see it or be in a place where it is visible to benefit from the influence. An eclipse is best thought of as a cosmic washcloth, wiping away the past and allowing a new understanding to shine through.

Friday November 25
Immortal Portal

Today's partial solar eclipse will be followed, on December 10, by a lunar eclipse. According to some mystics, pairs of eclipses act like 'portals'. One opens the door to another realm. The other closes it. The time between is supposed to be precious because it allows those with psychic gifts to connect with 'ethereal beings'. Even those of us without such abilities can expect to become more sensitive, responsive and empathetic. The astrological symbolism, which sounds tame by comparison, suggests an apparent ending, followed by a fresh start. But whatever you believe, it should be a rather magical weekend.

Saturday November 26
Your Week Ahead

This week, as we slip quietly across the border between November and December, we find Venus making a similar transition. There's no passport office at the end of Sagittarius and the beginning of Capricorn. Customs and Excise don't care what the planet of love brings with it. But Capricorns will soon notice a little more romance and confidence; while, rather cleverly, Venus will leave behind enough inspiration to ensure it is not missed when it leaves Sagittarius. And the rest of us? Well, even though the communication planet, Mercury, is now retrograde... we'll enjoy some surprisingly fruitful, positive exchanges.
