PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

February 13 2012 to February 19 2012

Monday February 13
Operation Lumination

Dear Jonathan, Several astrology books state that a full moon is not the best time to schedule an operation. They say there's a possibility of more confusion in the hospital and a risk of excess bleeding. What do you think? Claudia

Dear Claudia,
If I ever had to have an operation, I'd feel perfectly safe about having it during a full moon.

Dear Jonathan,
What do you make of the news story about the world's oldest astrology board, recently discovered in Croatia. Apparently it is over 2,000 years old. Mike

Dear Mike,
Aha! So that's where I left it!

Tuesday February 14
Funny Valentine

Valentine's Day is not an astrological event. No special planets align each year on February 14. Nor, do we know much about Saint Valentine. The modern church has all but phased him out of their memorials. But perhaps, to paraphrase the old saying 'if Valentine's Day didn't exist, we would have to invent it.' Clearly people want a special time to express their love for, and attraction to, each other. If you've got a date tonight or flowers on your doorstep today, enjoy! If not, fear not. Many more truly romantic occasions await us all later in the year.

Wednesday February 15
Where's Spot?

Jupiter, lately, has been shining brightly in the evening. Cloud cover permitting, those with telescopes and patient determination can see the famous 'red spot' tonight. Saturn rises a little later. Around midnight, if you've got the means to study it, you can pick out Saturn's rings. Mars is also now an early evening planet, wearing a fetching shade of subtle pink. Venus continues to be the 'first star of the night', even though it is not a star but a planet. A sky with plenty of astrological activity is always more auspicious than one where little is in view

Thursday February 16
New-fangled Angles

On December 16, Mars formed a sharp angle of 135 degrees to Jupiter. Recently, Mars started going retrograde and, as Jupiter had since edged further forward, the two planets soon began to repeat that angle. It becomes exact today. For the next few months, Jupiter appears to move faster than Mars so they won't align like this for a third and final time till August 20. First, on July 17, they'll form a harmonious trine. If you're involved in a drama that keeps getting tense, then easing off... those dates may well reflect the timing of your own journey.

Friday February 17
Celestial Lights, Sound and Action

This weekend, The Sun will enter Pisces. There it will align with Neptune, which just so happens to be sitting at the very start of this sign. That's traditionally viewed as an auspicious omen for all with an interest in film, photography or sound recording. Back in 1846, when Neptune was first discovered, the new ideas behind such technologies were just emerging. Those early experiments may not have changed much but consider how much they later gave rise to. It seems only fitting that the cosmos provided humanity with a whole new celestial symbol to describe such unthinkable ideas.

Saturday February 18
Your Week Ahead

Soon, we enter a phase called the Dark of the Moon, when great things can happen. And on Sunday, at 6.18am, the Sun enters Pisces. Zodiac signs don't begin or end at precisely the same moment each year. They vary by up to 24 hours. And that time of 6.18am only applies to Britain. A baby born in California will be a Piscean this year if it is born after 10.18pm Saturday night. In Sydney, the changeover is on Sunday at 5.18pm. If you were born on the cusp and would like free confirmation of your true sign, please check here.
