PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

June 8 2015 to June 14 2015

Monday June 8
As Above So Below

As Above, So Below. When I was a student astrologer, this was the title of one of my textbooks. If Alan Oken's wisely titled tome goes back a few decades, the principle it expounds upon goes back a few millennia. The ancient Greeks were echoing the even more ancient Babylonians with their belief that what happens in heaven affects what happens on Earth. As part of an unbroken chain of faith based on observation, astrologers still carry this philosophy forward. To me, the question is not, 'Is this true?' rather, 'What makes it true?' Tomorrow, I'll start exploring theories.

Tuesday June 9
Collision Course

'As above, so below.' Students of Latin and Greek texts frequently find reference to this ancient idea. It still holds sway in astrology and remains a key principle in several religions. Note, for example, the line of the Lord's Prayer acknowledging that the will of the divine will 'be done on earth as it is in heaven'. Once, it was sufficient simply to accept this. But that was before the onset of rationalism and the advent of The Large Hadron Collider. Tomorrow, I'll try to explain why 'how' and 'why' might not be such easy questions to answer.

Wednesday June 10
Cause and Effect

We are brought up to believe in the laws of 'cause and effect.' This once gave rise to the theories of 'invisible etheric rays' and 'gravitational pulls' with which my predecessors, in more innocent times, attempted to explain astrology. But the whole idea that, if we want a result, we must understand what leads to it, begins to fall apart when philosophers ask questions like 'Which came first, the chicken or the egg?' Or when physicists suggest that events may have different outcomes depending on whether they are being observed. Tomorrow, I'll describe a different 'possible reason' why astrology works.

Thursday June 11
Mysteries of Science

How does astrology work? I have been trying, this week, to explain why there is no point in trying to explain! In the last century, science grew ever more obsessed with logical, rational explanations, based on experiments that produce statistical 'proof'. Yet, as the Large Hadron Collider fires up once more in Switzerland in search of the mystery behind 'dark matter', a new generation of physicists is heading towards what, to them at least, seems a disturbing conclusion. The universe simply cannot be explained. Mysterious coincidences are in the essence of existence. Astrologers, of course, have always known this!

Friday June 12
Puppet on a String

'The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / But in ourselves, that we are underlings.' So goes the line from William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. It raises vital questions, still pressing today. Are we truly controlled by our guiding planets as if we were puppets dangling from invisible strings? Neither the mechanical nor spiritual implications of this idea would be seriously suggested by any astrologer today. Yet there remains an impressive pattern of correlation between cosmic alignments and earthly events. Where my predecessors felt obliged to explain this, I am happy just to acknowledge (and be amazed by) it!

Saturday June 13
Your Week Ahead

This week brings the mystical dark of the moon. It also brings the end of Mercury's retrograde phase and the beginning of Saturn's departure from Sagittarius as it returns to Scorpio for a short while due to its own retrograde motion. All these influences are positive as are most of the other aspects and alignments on the celestial events horizon. But positive experiences often present a degree of challenge first. If you see clouds rolling by your own sector of the sky this week, try not to forget that these may yet all turn out to have silver linings.

Sunday June 14
Your Week Ahead - Love Focus

Remember, your Love Forecast today doesn't just cover romance. A love forecast may also have something to say about your family life, your closest friendships and even some of your most important working relationships.
