PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

March 31 2014 to April 6 2014

Monday March 31
Mosquito Wing Theory

Dear Jonathan,
You recently suggested that Pluto's categorical reassignment was due to astronomers' childish obsession with comparative size. Of course, you do realise that if Pluto were to retain planetary status there would be no reason not to also include thousands of other similarly sized objects whizzing around out there. A mosquito in the delivery room would exert more gravitational influence on a newborn than any of those remote 'planets'. Regards, Marc

Dear Marc,
No astrologer would ever ascribe astrological 'influence' to gravity. And I'm not arguing in favour of further astronomical 'promotion', just against a most unjustified demotion.

Tuesday April 1
Gender Specifics

Dear Jonathan,
Some astrologers say that gender can affect the traits of your sign. So, for example, Cancerian women differ from Cancerian men. Do you agree? Taja

Dear Taja,
Astrologers believe that all the signs have some soft, tender characteristics and some tough, assertive ones. While men more often display the more 'masculine' traits of a sign and women more often show the 'feminine' ones... there's no cosmic law that enforces a dividing line based on gender. Many indeed, might say that to feel 'whole', we need to become comfortable expressing all the potential characteristics of our sign.

Wednesday April 2
Elementary

Hello Jonathan,
I have a question about secondary elements in star signs. It seems to be implied that the three versions of an element differ in their relative likenesses but I can't find any definite description. Do you know if there is one? James

Dear James,
I had a real 'Huh?' moment when I first saw your letter. But I think you must be referring to the way that sign is either Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable... and also either Fire, Earth, Air or Water. Watch this space over the next few days and I'll go into plenty of detail.

Thursday April 3
Cardinal

Last week, during my talk at Lancaster Library, I gave a lot of attention to the rare, powerful 'Cross' alignment that's now building up in the Cardinal Signs between Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto. It will culminate shortly after April's Total Lunar Eclipse and it is as significant as it is unusual. I had so much to say about it, I fear I overlooked a key point. So towards the end of the evening, one lady asked (sensibly), 'What ARE the Cardinal signs?' Tomorrow, I'll commence a back-to-basics tour of the zodiac with an answer to that.

Friday April 4
Quality Control

Most people know the twelve signs can be divided into three groups of four 'elements'. Next week, I'll say more about the Fire, Earth, Air and Water signs. Today, I want to mention another method of categorisation that splits the zodiac into three groups of four 'qualities'. The Cardinal signs have the most 'get-up-and-go'. They are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. The 'Fixed signs' bestow, as the name implies, a determination to see things through. They are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Then there are the mutable (or adaptable) signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.

Saturday April 5
Grand National

In this space each week, I normally comment only on celestial events due to happen within the next seven days. Yet what's really exceptional now is how exceptional NEXT week is due to be. Ignoring it is like being a tour guide trying to make remarks about ordinary scenery when you know that round the next corner there will be a stunning panorama. And I'm sure that inwardly, we can all sense this coming. What makes this week truly important is the way it brings events and realisations that increase our willingness to entertain, explore and accept major change.

Sunday April 6
