Your Thoughts on Iraq
1 2 3 4 5
On Friday 7th March, the Thought for the Day published the following: an email criticising Jon's stance on the proposed war with Iraq, and his reply with an accompanying cartoon. This provoked a huge response from readers with over a 1,000 emails received to date. Below is a 'snapshot' of some the emails received.

Dear Jonathan,
I'm just curious, how would you propose that Saddam Hussein be dealt with? This is a man who kills his own sons in law, cuts peoples tongues out for lying - his own people live in constant fear of his power. This is clearly not someone to whom reason or compassion means anything; he is filled with ancient biblical hatreds, to die for Allah is to go directly to heaven. I don't necessarily agree wholeheartedly with my government, although now that the decision has been made I have to support the people who must carry it through, I pray for their safety, they are going forward to do the job they signed on for- good or bad. But I wonder if all the peace demonstrators really think that diplomacy would work with a man like this. I have also always found it ironic how much death and destruction have always been wrought in the name of some religion or other. Thanks for reading this.

Dear Jonathan,
I am writing to you from the United States. Although I am an American, I strongly oppose going to war with Iraq. I watched on the news last night about Americans boycotting French products because of France's disapproval of us. I am not the only one that is fed up with the behaviour that is going on all over the world, including my home turf. Americans are totally warped and naive about what's really going on in the world. What's really the truth is not the truth. People need to put aside their egos and realize that love is the most important impression you leave behind.

Jonathan,
I read your thought for the day, and really just can't see where you get that. The US does not want to 'kill' anyone... it may happen but it is not the point to 'kill'. The object is to disarm and save lives in the future. Your mind is locked... you must never let that happen. You are too smart for that. Open up to another view, or at least consider it. K.W. P.S. Wait 'til the film footage starts rolling in, you will be ashamed of your position... guaranteed.

Dear Jonathan,
I live in a suburb of Denver, Colorado, USA. Over the past few days our news only starts with "W", being weather or war. We were hit with the most unbelievable snow storm that has closed our government offices and left everyone stranded in their homes or other places. The record snow storm in Denver was 46" in 1913 and we still may exceed that record because the snow isn't done yet. We have at least 36" if not more in the suburbs west of Denver. It is hard to believe they are prediction snow and drifting amounting to 3' to 8' tall in the foothills. Our airport is closed, building roofs are crashing in, buses are not running, and the post offices are not delivering mail. The good news is this has reminded people to care about one another and try to help those in need like disabled and elderly people. The men are shovelling snow for disabled and elderly women and those with 4 wheel drive are standing by to assist others in need. If we have telephone service, power and heat, and food that is about all we need. It is so nice to see people care about neighbours, friends and loved ones even if it is only by telephone numerous times a day. It is so amazing how one simple act of the heavens can bring people to realize what really matters in life is the simple things like just love and care about one another.
