Afraid of getting stuck
For as long as I can remember, I have dreamt about going into a house and moving from one room to another. As I do so, I have to squeeze through ever smaller gaps and I feel increasingly worried that I will get stuck. My other recurring dream is about the difficulty of finding a toilet where I have privacy.

Yvonne, Maidstone

Dear Yvonne,
The rooms represent different aspects of your nature which you would like to explore. The dream though, implies that you are being restricted by limitations in the structure of your life. You tell me you are 37, happily married, and work in a bank. You say that you quite enjoy your job but you would not have freely chosen it. Then you go on to mention that you are artistic and enjoy doing things on the spur of the moment. This suggests to me that some of those rooms contain creative potential, waiting to be explored. Your daily routine does not provide you with enough opportunity to express this side of your nature. No wonder you are worried about getting stuck. Your second dream confirms your need for greater self-expression, symbolised by the need to visit the toilet. But your inability to find privacy suggests a fear of revealing yourself.

Together, these dreams carry one message: you need to allow yourself more room to manoeuvre. Perhaps you can't change your job and perhaps you don't even really want to... but what is stopping you from making space in your life to enjoy more creative pursuits? The spontaneous, expressive part of your personality is demanding your attention.
