Baking a cake Although I don’t always remember my dreams, I had one a few weeks ago that I keep thinking about, so I’d love to know what it means. In this dream, I am in my boyfriend’s kitchen, baking a cake. When I open the oven door to see if it’s done, a small frog pops its head out of a hole at the back of the oven. I can’t imagine how it got in there, and I’m surprised that it hasn’t burnt itself. I take it out and put it into the garden. Then more frogs appear in the oven. I keep putting them out into the garden, but as fast as I do so, more keep appearing. When I woke up, I felt very confused. Liz R, Derby
Dear Liz
You tell me that he wants to marry you and have a family but you are more interested in building up your business. Marriage and motherhood, you say, are not on your agenda. Yet your dream indicates that your deeper self has its own agenda. In fact it seems to be contemplating something along the lines of the traditional ‘bun in the oven’!
What, though, is the significance of those frogs? Because frogs are associated with water and rain, they have always symbolised fertility, and in medieval times they were even thought to resemble the human foetus. It’s interesting then, that despite your best efforts to clear the oven, those frogs simply keep on appearing. You may protest that you don’t want children, but your dream clearly suggests otherwise. It carries a strong message that your maternal instinct is not only emerging, but will prove almost impossible to repress.
I suspect your confusion arises from your assumption that having a family will mean sacrificing your career. Why do you have to choose between them? The fact that you’re self-employed means that you have a certain amount of flexibility in the way that you structure your life. Your dream indicates the need for some serious soul-searching. It’s time for an honest reappraisal of your priorities.
