The ballerina
I had a wonderful dream in which I was a ballerina, dancing a lead role. I felt blissfully happy. When I woke up, it seemed so real that I was convinced the dream was a sing that I should take up ballet again and fulfil my childhood ambition to be a dancer. Am I right?

Penelope P, Winchester

Dear Penelope
I would hate to discourage anybody from fulfilling a dream. Honestly, though, at the age of 32, you cannot seriously think it would be feasible for you to become a professional ballet dancer. What your dream does reveal is a secret yearning to be in the spotlight.

How often do you actually go out dancing? If you cannot be a star of the ballet, you can still shine on the dance floor. Indeed, your dream suggests that you can probably still shine in many other areas of life, if you can only respond to its call. Something within you yearns for fulfilment. As a child, you set your heart on being a dancer. Although as an adult you have had to settle for a different existence, the dancer in you still wants and deserves a way to express itself. Many other activities resemble ballet dancing in that they require great discipline, but lead to an experience of supreme freedom and joy.

You are right to feel that your dream is urging you to take action, but wrong to interpret it too literally.
