My brace comes loose
Since I left home, at the age of 25, I have been treated for depression.
During this period I have had a recurring dream in which I am wearing
a brace on my teeth and it keeps coming loose. Why should I dream this
when in fact I stopped wearing a brace in my mid-teens?'

Dear Beverley
Teeth can have different meanings in dreams depending on the particular
circumstances of the dreamer. Frequently, though, they represent our
ability to get an assertive grasp on life or indeed, a need to sink
our teeth into something.
Other points that you make in your letter suggest that your depression
has come about as a result of repressing powerful feelings of anger.
The fact that you are dreaming about a brace seems to confirm this.
Just as a real brace controls the way teeth grow, the dream brace
symbolises the mechanism whereby you have curbed the more rebellious,
aggressive side of your nature.
You tell me that not only did your father hit you throughout your
childhood but that he carried on doing so until you left home. Even
then he continued to try and rule your life. As a child, you obviously
had no choice but to suffer the consequences of your father's violence.
Even as an adult you were evidently still unable to stand up to him.
Please feel encouraged by your dream. It indicates that your treatment
is working. The brace is coming loose because you are finally getting
ready to relax your iron hold on the deeply wounded and angry person
within and thus allow her to be healed.
