Fear of children falling
I often dream that my children are toddlers again. They have gone somewhere really dangerous, usually a very high ledge on a tall building. I go to rescue them, using a plank. Halfway across, though, I look down and freeze with terror. I don't know what to do as I'm terrified for myself and also terrified that my children will fall.

Andrea, Durham

Dear Andrea,
You write that since your husband died three years ago, you have done your best to provide your children, now aged 14 and 13, with a stable, loving home. Now you are planning to move house, although you worry abut coping with this all by yourself. Yet your children are not toddlers, in need of protection, but teenagers. Why, then, do you feel that you have to cope entirely alone? Why not involve them with the process of moving? Would this make you a less loving or effective mother?

You go on to mention that you teach part-time but lack the confidence to undertake full-time work again. The children in the dream could represent the confident, playful, adventurous side of your own nature, which was left 'high and dry' after the shock of losing your husband. Your dream could be an expression of your longing to retrieve your faith in yourself. Or it could simply be telling you that you are terrified of falling short and failing your children and have therefore set yourself impossibly high standards of parenting. Without further consultation, I cannot tell which meaning is the more accurate. Either way though, the dream is encouraging you to recognise that the only thing you have to fear is fear itself.
