Buildings get bigger
When I was younger, I used to dream that when I went outside, everything around me kept getting bigger and bigger. All the buildings were larger than they should have been. It was a nightmare. I haven't had this dream for ages - but my eight-year old son is now having the same dream. My current recurring dream is that I wake up in a bed in an unfamiliar house. Everything is dark. I want to go to the toilet but I don't know where I am or where to go.

Dear Kate
To a small person, the world can seem overwhelmingly big. This sensation is not easy to verbalise. That's why it often emerges in the form of a dream. This may be all that your son's dream means. But you too have had this dream - and that implies something more complex.

Carl Jung was a great pioneer in the field of psychology. He refused to analyse children's dreams. He said that children pick up subtle signals about their parents which then appear in dream form. Jung felt it was more important to explore the parents' hidden needs and feelings.

You write that you are in your mid-30s, work in the civil service and have a 'fairly happy married life'. Your dreams are all about buildings, man-made constructions. Could it be that you secretly feel overpowered by the restrictions and demands of your daily life?

To dream about being inside a house is to dream about your own inner world. If the house is unfamiliar, it suggests there are parts of yourself that you don't know very well. You describe yourself as being 'in the dark'. You clearly need to shed some light on something, but what?

The need to go to the toilet can have a very simple explanation, but it can also have a deep symbolic meaning. It can suggest a yearning for a creative or an emotional outlet. To achieve greater self-expression, it's important to become more assertive and outgoing - yet in your dream you say you 'don't know where you are or where to go.'

Recurring dreams carry an important message, one which we need to heed and act upon. Your dreams are urging you to be make your life more exciting. They may well disappear for both you and your son once you become more spontaneous, confident and adventurous.
