Of all the animals that can feature in dreams, the dog is the most common. Perhaps this is because of its reputation as ‘man’s best friend’. For this reason, a dog often symbolises loyalty and companionship. It can, though, also represent intuition. This makes sense when we consider the way in which a dog ‘sniffs things out’, using its highly developed sense of smell. Your dream may therefore be encouraging you to trust your intuition. The meaning is similar when a dream features a guide dog. Again, it is saying something about the importance of following your instincts rather than your intellect. If the dog in your dream is guarding something or someone, it may be that you need to be more watchful, either in general or in respect of a specific situation or person. You are being warned to be on your guard. A dream in which a playful dog appears, however, carries the opposite meaning. Here, you are being urged to cultivate a more relaxed, spontaneous approach. People who are depressed often dream of a black dog. If the dog is snarling or barking in a threatening way, it may symbolise feelings of anger that you are afraid to reveal in waking life and have therefore suppressed. This is a very common cause of depression and it’s important to find a way of expressing your feelings, possibly with professional help. A dream like this that keeps recurring indicates that your subconscious mind is doggedly determined to make you hear the message – and act on it.
In the symbolic language of dreams, dogs usually signify masculine energy and can be a metaphor for a penis. If the dog in your dream is clearly female, it may represent a tendency to be bitchy or a feeling that you are the object of somebody else’s bitchiness.
