Recurring flying dream
Since the age of 17, I have had a recurring dream in which I am flying just high enough to avoid people who are shouting and reaching up to try to get me. In many of these dreams, I escape out of the windows of a house and fly off around the countryside.

Dear Gavin
Dreams like this can have many meanings, but I am struck by the fact that you distinctly recall being 17 when you first took flight. At this age, many of us rebel against the demands of the adult world, whether at home, at school, or in a job. Frustrated by the seemingly petty restrictions of daily life, we long to spread our wings and escape to new territory. Often we express this yearning for total freedom by granting ourselves, in our dreams at least, the ability to fly.

Your dream would therefore be simple to interpret if it were not for the fact that you are no longer a boy. Indeed, you write that you are now a grandfather! From the recurring nature of your dream, I suspect a part of you has always felt encumbered by your responsibilities and secretly yearns to remain eternally young and free. Clearly, you must continue to honour your commitments, yet you must also take very seriously your powerful urge to rise above the mundane.

These recurring dreams are urging you to satisfy your spiritual needs. How you do this is for you to discover. You could find fulfilment through exploring religion, learning meditation, or simply making time for an interest that makes your spirit soar.
