Flying and floating
I often dream that I am floating around the house about a foot above the ground. It is quite inconvenient as I have to pull myself down to reach things below me but otherwise I am carrying on a perfectly normal life. Nobody seems to notice that my feet are not touching the ground.

Grace, Hereford

Every few weeks I dream that as I step off a kerb, a gust of wind lifts me into the air. I hover around ten feet off the ground, enjoying the sensation enormously - but as soon as I try to go higher, I wake up.

Rob, Nottingham

Dear Grace and Rob,
Although both these dreams are about rising up into the air, they have quite different meanings. Grace, your lack of contact with the ground suggests some aspect of reality which you are unwilling to confront. In your letter, you mention that you find your normal daily routine almost unbearably humdrum. In your dream, you therefore try to escape by floating off into your own world. The fact that others don’t seem to notice implies that you can successfully hide your feelings of frustration. Yet this is not the answer. The dream suggests that you need to come back to earth and build yourself a lifestyle that has more to offer.

Rob, you tell me you are a keen, competitive sportsman and that you love to excel. The wind, lifting you off your feet, reflects the high spirits you feel when you win. Although you enjoy the sensation of being slightly ‘above’ everybody else, your dream tells us that you have a healthy inbuilt resistance to feeling too superior. There is nothing to add except to wish you many such trips.
