New house is dangerous
For the past eight years, I have had a recurring dream in which I’m with my family, looking at a house my husband has just bought for us. The children run around to explore and I follow them. I’m thrilled to discover how much bigger it is than our old house. Suddenly I see that there is a half-finished new wing behind a door. In the floor is a large hole leading to a deep, dark, water-filled cellar. I can see exposed live wires and unsecured structures, and I am full of foreboding for the safety of my children. Yet my husband sees no danger.

Dear Jane,
You tell me you have lived in your current house for several years and have no plans to move. Your dream therefore has a symbolic, not a literal meaning. You go on to explain that eight years ago, when the dream first began, your husband persuaded you to leave your job as a further education lecturer. You took part-time work as a pre-school assistant so that you could spend more time with your children.

The house in the dream reflects your new circumstances: your husband makes more space for the family and you ‘follow’ your children. It also reflects your feelings about the change of lifestyle. At first, you are delighted. You glimpse possibilities for development, symbolised by the new wing. Almost immediately, though, you become aware that all is not what it seemed at first sight. The hole in the floor indicates that you are not on solid ground. Since a cellar is situated below ground level, in a dream it symbolises our subconscious mind.

Water usually represents our emotions. It looks as though you’re suppressing some deep feelings that need examining. What exactly are those ‘exposed live wires’? Do you secretly suspect that you’re in danger of blowing a fuse? Those unsecured structures imply that the current set-up could easily collapse. Yet your husband seems oblivious to the danger. You tell me that, although you love your children, you miss the stimulus of your former job and you are seriously considering returning to it.

You admit to feeling angry with your husband for persuading you to give it up. No wonder you have a sense of foreboding. Your dream carries a warning about the need for an urgent reappraisal of a situation that clearly doesn’t work for you.
