The Invisible Figure
For the last two years, I’ve had a dream in which I’m kneeling down under the weight of what I can only describe as an invisible figure on my shoulders. It exerts such pressure on me that I can’t move. My husband is standing beside me. I beg him to help me but he insists that he can’t see this figure. Inwardly, I’m screaming but what emerges is just a groaning sound.
Louise, Sidcup

Dear Louise,
You tell me that two years ago, you were on the point of leaving your husband for a man who had helped you through a period of great stress. Your marriage had been on shaky ground for some time, and communication between your husband and yourself was almost non-existent. For the sake of your children, you decided to try and rebuild your troubled marriage.

Despite your best efforts, though, your husband doesn’t seem able to forgive you. You feel he still wants to punish you and he subjects you to what you describe as mental torment. Your dream indicates that you are shouldering a burden which is so powerful that it keeps you pinned down in a submissive position. What exactly is this burden and why is it invisible? It doesn’t symbolise your husband since he appears in the dream as himself. Could it, then, represent continuing feelings of guilt about your affair that cause you to repress yourself in order to placate your husband? Or does it signify some other experience that was never resolved and therefore subconsciously continues to affect you? I suspect that both meanings may be relevant.

If you cannot forgive yourself for your affair, you may secretly feel that your husband is justified in treating you badly. Equally, the fact that you have put up with such a deeply unsatisfactory relationship for so long could indicate a lack of self-worth that predates your marriage. Either way, you clearly have some very painful emotions that you’re quite unable to express. You want to scream – but you can only groan. Your husband can see nothing and is totally unsympathetic. Yet the dream is sending you a strong message about your need to focus less on his attitude and more on your own inner torment. Only then will you be able to tackle the problems within your marriage. Please do not hesitate to seek help in laying this ghost to rest.
