King playing cards
In my dream I am a king – of the kind you find in children’s story-books. I am sitting on a crate in a factory yard, playing patience. Over on the other side of the yard is the Queen, as in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. She is annoyed because I am not playing cards with her and insists that we both go to another side of the yard and play cards together. Before we get there, though, she changes into a child, climbs over a very high wire fence and says: ‘I’m going over there to play with those other children’. I am absolutely livid. I think to myself ‘I went to all that trouble and then she does that!’ What can this strange dream mean?
James, Poole

Dear James,
The fact that the dream is set in a factory yard implies that you have work to do. What can this be? In your letter, you tell me only that you are a bachelor who has always chosen to lead a rather solitary life. The Queen represents a playful, spontaneous, sociable force. She is an aspect of your character that you are not allowing yourself to explore. Clearly, she is frustrated that the King, symbolising the predominantly masculine side of your nature, is too absorbed in a game of his own to be interested in her. Why, though, when he has (reluctantly) made an effort, does she play such a mean trick on him? Is she paying him back for his somewhat curmudgeonly attitude? ‘Wonderland’ was quite different to ‘normal’ life. Your dream therefore suggests an inner yearning for more adventure and discovery. It is inviting you to become less ‘fenced in’ and more open to exploring the pleasures of companionship.
