Lioness and Boy
I am visiting a small village of thatched mud huts. Suddenly, I see a lioness. She doesn't seem to have noticed me. But I run towards the hut where I am staying. Looking back, I see her looking at me. Then a young boy races across. I feel frightened because the lioness has started to trot towards him. He reaches my hut just before she does. I drag him in and shut the door. I ask if he noticed the lioness. He replies: "Yes. So what?" He seems unafraid. I wonder if I should have let her in.

Carolyn, Lowestoft

Dear Carolyn,
The primitive setting of your dream corresponds to a deeply instinctive aspect of your psyche. The lioness represents a wild, powerful part of yourself. You want to keep the boy safe from her, even though he is not afraid and the lioness does not seem dangerous. You write that you are a widow of 41. A year ago, you began a relationship with a younger man who, you say, is not particularly supportive and who shows no sign of wanting commitment. Yet you love him... and the relationship provides elements of excitement which your marriage lacked. This makes me wonder if you are encouraging him to act more like a boy than a man. Are you afraid you might lose him if you were to reveal the full extent of your power? Dare you not treat him as an equal? Lions symbolise pride. For the sake of your pride, let that inner lioness into the hut... and into your heart.
