Missing the school bus I often dream that I am getting ready to leave for school. For some reason, I am feeling anxious to get to the bus quickly. I rush out, but when I arrive at the bus stop, I realise that I have left something important behind. Panic-stricken, I go back to get it. By now, I have missed the bus from my usual stop, so I rush to the next one – only to find that once again I have left something behind. I always wake up feeling helpless and upset. Tony, Chelsmford
Dear Tony
In your letter, you tell me you have always wanted to be an actor. Your mother is supportive, but your father wants you to train for a career that will offer you more security. You say you accept that he has your best interests at heart. Yet in your dream, you keep ‘accidentally’ missing the bus. This suggests that, deep down, you are not prepared to be driven along a prescribed route over which you have no choice. Meanwhile, the part of you that wants to please your father wants to catch the bus. But this would mean leaving behind something that is clearly very important to you. Since your mother has faith in your aspirations, could you not enlist her help in trying to negotiate with your father?
To succeed in the tough world of acting, you will need a lot of commitment. Your dream is challenging you to discover whether you have it.
