I am 39 years old (though I look more like 26) and currently embarking on a career in singing. There’s no doubt that I’m becoming increasingly aware of being subjected to public scrutiny. I also feel that both my parents and my husband exert a restrictive influence over me. I would really appreciate your comments.

Many people have dreams like these but the precise meaning varies according to individual circumstances. Often, though, being naked in public implies feelings of being exposed and therefore vulnerable in some area of waking life.

You clearly suspect that your dreams are related to your new career as a performer. Whilst I would agree that ‘performance anxiety’ could certainly trigger this type of dream, I think your dreams have a further, more subtle implication. Notice that nobody offers you any clothes. In dreams, clothes represent our persona, the image we choose to present to the world. Could it be then, that you are looking to other people, including your mother, to provide you with a sense of identity?

You say you feel restricted by your family – but others can only inhibit our freedom if we allow them to. You may look younger than your years but you are not a powerless girl, even though this seems to be how you experience yourself. Your dreams are urging you to claim your authority as a mature woman. Singing may well help you to find your own, individual voice but you could also benefit from a course of assertiveness training. When you allow the feisty ‘inner woman’ to emerge, these dreams will stop.
