Going onstage
I am watching a play at the theatre. At one point the performers repeat something several times and I realise it’s a cue for me to go on. I have no idea what I’m supposed to do, but I run onstage anyway. The others are doing a dance but I don’t know the steps or the words. They are furious and a man hisses at me to get off. Then we are all backstage and the man is telling me I have let them all down. I argue that I’m not meant to be in the show and have not even been to any rehearsals. I end up feeling unsure of myself as everyone seems to think I should know what to do.

Rosemary, Horsham

Dear Rosemary
Since you say you are not involved in show business, this dream can only reflect your concern about your performance on the stage of life.

The angry man must be a part of yourself with which you have a conflict. ‘He’ expects you to do something which is clearly impossible. When, inevitably, you do not succeed, he tries to make you feel inadequate. I am impressed that you argue with him in the dream. This indicates that you are, subconsciously, tired of setting your standards unrealistically high, and tired, too, of feeling obliged to conform. The dream, though, shows that you automatically try to meet other people’s expectations. You clearly still lack faith in your own sense of identity.

The dream suggests the way forward is to resist taking your cue from others and dance, instead, to your own individual tune.
