Rambling house
I keep having a dream in which I am exploring an old, rambling house. The ground floor is in good repair and well-furnished. The rooms on the next floor are a little shabby. When I go upstairs to the attic, I have an overwhelming fear of opening the door. Eventually I do but the room is cold and dilapidated. I feel very afraid. I cannot stay there. This dream varies a little each time. Once, the attic room was full of insects. Last night, a room on a lower floor contained a baby.

Kate, Lymington

Dear Kate,
The ground floor of a house is the setting for everyday life. Yours is in good order, indicating that you cope well at this level. Other aspects of your nature though, symbolised by those higher floors, need attention. The first floor of a house usually contains the bedroom. Thus, it reflects issues concerning close relationships. You write that you are 48, divorced and working as a nurse. About a year ago, around the time the dream began, you ended a long-standing relationship. Now you feel rather lonely. The attic ought to house your aspirations and spiritual ideals. Yet what do you encounter? A swarm of spine-chilling, primeval, irrational fears. Why is this? What is it that you are afraid of?

You go on, in your letter, to explain that recent bereavements have made you more aware of your own mortality. This has engendered a desire to help people who have personal problems - but you are not yet sure how to fulfil this desire. The presence of the baby confirms that the impulse to lead a 'new life' is stirring within you. The dream is suggesting that you can and will help others but first you must help yourself.
