Swimming with sharks
In my dream, I am leaving a marina to go shark fishing. A little way out to sea, some big sharks start jumping up in the water behind us. Then I find myself swimming in some blue water. In it, there are some small sharks. As I lie on my back in the water, I can feel the top fins of the sharks under me, running along my back – but I am not sacred, I am smiling and laughing.

Dear Karen
Finding yourself in shark-infested waters is no laughing matter. The sharks represent a wild, predatory urge within your psyche. Your dream is sending you a strong warning. You are playing with dangerous emotional forces yet you seem unaware of your perilous position. What are these small sharks that you can laugh about – and how likely is it that they may grow into the larger variety you can see in the ocean nearby? In your letter, you mention that although your husband loves you very much, you often have crushes on other men. These may feel harmless – but are they? You clearly have a craving for excitement. That’s fine, but instead of trying to satisfy it by nurturing fantasies about other men, why not try to find a creative challenge of some kind? Your dream is saying that, in rocking the safe boat of your marriage, you might land in deeper waters than you had bargained for.
