Someone takes my baby Once, when I was about 15, I dreamed that I had a beautiful baby and someone took it from me. I searched high and low and finally woke up in tears. My mother said the dream was a prophesy that I would never have a child and I never did. Betty, Birmingham Dear Betty, You write that, at the age of 70, you are very active, have many friends and attend a computer course. Despite having travelled widely, you have never been lost or mislaid any of your possessions. Why, then, should you have such dreams? The clue lies in the dream about being deprived of your baby. A prophetic dream anticipates an event which subsequently occurs - but as you never actually had a baby to lose, it cannot have been a prophecy. We must not judge your mother too harshly for applying such a superstitious interpretation. This belief was once very common. The true meaning of this dream, though, was symbolic in another sense. Teenagers often experience a longing to stop meeting other people’s expectations and to discover their true identity. The baby in your dream was a glimpse of new life stirring within your psyche, but it would seem that circumstances conspired to prevent you from exploring this. Although you have such a full and extroverted existence, there are still aspects of your potential to be discovered. These dreams of loss indicate nothing more (nor less) than a deep inner yearning for a new freedom of spirit. ![]() (Sun Taurus, Moon Scorpio)
