Welcome to John Michell, a best-selling author and world authority on the mysteries of existence. John writes regular weekly articles for my page in the Daily Mirror newspaper. Now those articles can be read on this site. It is a thrill to have John writing for us about unexplained phenomena. I have been an admirer of his work since I was a teenager. I hope you enjoy his thought-provoking work. Jonathan Cainer

3rd April 2003 - The murder mystery of a Russian Princess
One of the greatest mysteries
of last century is the story of Anastasia. In 1918, after the Russian
revolution, Tsar Nicholas, his wife Alexandra, their young son and four
daughters were murdered by Bolsheviks. They were shot and bayoneted
in the cellar of their Siberian prison-house. The bodies were thrown
down a mine shaft.
The event was not well witnessed, so details are uncertain. Rumours
went round that one of the girls had survived the massacre. Two years
later, a young woman attempting suicide was dragged from a canal in
Berlin. She was distraught and unknown, so they took her to a lunatic
asylum. Gradually, as she recovered, the woman began to speak about
her past. She was Anastasia, the Tsar's youngest daughter, just 17 when
the family was murdered. She had been stabbed and shot, but she survived,
and was taken out of Russia by a soldier.
Russians in western Europe could never agree about Anastasia. Many of
the Tsar's friends and family recognized the woman as the little princess
they had known. Others denied her claim, or refused to hear it.
After her death, DNA evidence was produced that seemed to discredit
her. But her supporters still insist that this was a put-up job, and
that Anna Anderson, as she later called herself, was the real Anastasia.
Here I can see a third possibility – that the spirit of a murdered girl
moved into a desperate woman in Germany, and made. her act like a Russian
princess.
