John Michell Mysteries

As you surely know, if you have been following this column, Mars is about to come closer to the earth than at any point before in the whole history of humanity. Tomorrow and through next week, I'll be bringing you a series of extended features about what this means to us all. Meanwhile, many people believe they have already had a close contact with powerful forces from outer space. Today, John Michell, our world renowned expert on mysteries, takes a closer look at some reader's letters, describing such encounters. Jonathan Cainer

Last week's letter, about a reader's UFO experiences, has had a big response. I am not surprised. The UFO phenomenon is perhaps the most important happening of our times.

Millions of people have seen these mystery objects. But no one knows what they are or where they are from. In 1967 I wrote my first book. The Flying Saucer Vision, and have kept up with the subject ever since. But I still have no idea what is going on. The one thing I know for sure is that UFOs have an effect on minds. Some people have been inspired and gained benefit from a UFO experience. Others have been confused. It may be that Carl Jung was right. He said in 1959 that the purpose of UFOs is to change our old ways of thinking, to make us more attuned to the spirit of the Aquarian Age. That is a good way of seeing things, but does it fit the phenomenon?

Here are two personal accounts from readers: From Kathie Marshall, Wiltshire.
“It was around September 20, 1982. about 9pm on a clear, starlit night at Wilcot Road, Pewsey, Wilts, where we lived. We had been in Pewsey with our five-year-old daughter, visiting the annual fair My then husband, our daughter and I were walking home. Suddenly in front of us, skimming rooftops, was a flyng saucer. I remember seeing it first and pointing, saying, ‘My God. what is that?’ We all saw it and watched as it circled us. It was very large, rotating and completely silent. It was the standard flying saucer shape, but around its perimeter were the most beautiful lights in shimmering, rainbow colours. Truly beautiful and amazing. We must have watched this UFO for about a minute until it disappeared over the roof of our house It was very large and could not be mistaken for a plane, balloon or anything else. I phoned the RAF at Upavon and asked if there was anything at that time that could fly without sound. They said ‘no’.”

Maria in Huddersfield has seen two UFOs. The first was like Kathie Marshall's, very big with coloured lights around it. Maria writes:
“I saw my second flying saucer when I was picking my daughter up from babysitting. It was after midnight. We were just approaching our house when we saw something in the sky. The clouds looked to be parting to allow its entry. This time its shape was more cigar-looking, and again it was very large. I stopped the car to get a better look. My daughter, who was 16, was near hysterical. telling me to drive home. But I was transfixed. We remained looking at it for a while longer, but then I felt that for my daughter's sake I should take her home. I haven't seen anything since that time but. I feel sure that one day I will.”

These accounts are honest and valuable. I am longing to discuss them, but must wait till next Thursday. We will have more UFO evidence then. Meanwhile, I should like to hear more first-hand accounts of mysterious happenings from readers. After looking at UFOs I would like to turn our attention to coincidence and synchronicity. If you have an interesting experience involving coincidences, especially those which have in some way changed your life, please write to me.
